Description
Asparagus is a genus of plants in the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia, Africa, and Australia, introduced throughout the world; they grow mainly in dry climates. The most common and typical species is Asparagus officinalis. Some species of asparagus are herbs, others are subshrubs that develop an underground rhizome and above-ground more or less branched stems, many species creeping.
The upper parts (about 20 cm) of the shoots of some species of asparagus (asparagus officinalis, short-leaved asparagus, and ringed asparagus) are considered a delicacy.
